Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
