During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
